GRC Tracks Students

GRC has developed a tracking device which works from a mobile phone, using the phone’s data package to transmit the signal.

GRC is currently testing this new software by tracking two students who are hitch-hiking from Cardiff to Marrakesh in Morocco. They, along with 1100 other students are raising money for the Link Community Development Charity.

The security issues relating to hitch-hiking are a great concern for The Link Community Development charity (LCD) and parents alike. GRC is allowing LCD access to two tracking packages to help them provide a more immediate emergency response - currently the charity relies on the students sending in a daily text message. The bonus of the tracking system is that the student’s exact location can be logged at all times. In the event of an emergency a precise location is immediately identifiable. From a parent’s point of view, peace of mind is provided as they can follow their son or daughters progress by logging into a web site and observing through Google Earth exactly where the student is. A panic alarm is set into the mobile phone which the student can activate at any time. The panic button will then rerelease text messages to a nominated phone and send emails to a pre arranged email address.

The monitoring of the students will allow GRC to perfect an already efficient system before launching it on the open market.
